I spent years working with victims of rape and incest for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape decades ago. Trauma is a big problem. If you are dealing with trauma or you love someone who is, take the time to learn more about it.
Trauma can interrupt the bravest individuals, as shown in Clint Eastwood’s Shooter American elite . You watch Bradley Cooper return home with PTSD and struggle to feel good in the normal world after the trauma of war.
Trauma makes you question the very core of who you are, like a jellyfish stranded on the sand.
Trauma can occur in overlapping experiences over time, such as Brian Wilson in the movie Love and Mercy . His father hit him so often that he was deaf in his left ear. Then he repeated the experiment of never pleasing his father with the deranged psychologist who treated him. There is a danger in repeating patterns that are harmful when someone is suffering from trauma.
There are now great books that capture trauma in the worlds of fiction and non-fiction. There is more awareness of trauma at 2015 than at 620 when incest victims suffered in silence for fear of not being believed. The books are listed on the trauma page of my website.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR for short is discussed as a viable treatment for trauma therapy. There is an explanation video on YouTube.
